Description
We’re going on a Phoneme Hunt! We’re going on a Grapheme Hunt!
Phoneme, or sound, hunts encourage students to notice and think about the words they’re reading. Noticing the letters, also called graphemes, encourages thoughtful spelling. Grapheme Hunt engage the student in a search while you are reading a book with them or they’re reading independently.
You choose! There’s a page using the term, “phoneme” and another using “sound.” The grapheme hunt page doesn’t use any terms, just the < > angle brackets. Use whichever pages work for your teaching and students.
With either the phoneme or grapheme hunts, use the words chosen to create word sorts. Sort by sounds (phonemes) or by letters (graphemes).
Make these phoneme and grapheme hunts part of word study notebooks for each student. They’ll refer back to these pages to remind themselves of different ways to spell a phoneme or what else a letter can spell. They might use them to share with parents what they’re learning.
Free Download includes 1 phoneme sheet, 1 sound sheet, and 1 letter/grapheme sheet.
Happy Hunting!
