When I began working with students, the reading would come. But I couldn’t figure out how to help them understand spelling. There were so many words that didn’t follow the program’s rules. They just had to memorize…but that’s not easy for my students. I realized one program wasn’t enough.
It wasn’t doing everything my students needed. .
Being literate isn’t just being able to read. It’s also spelling and writing.
I am a lifelong learner. To be good at anything, we have to keep learning. This leads me to find the best tools for my students’ needs.
Reading is a gift every person deserves. Spelling is a key to both reading and writing. It opens your eyes to how language works like nothing else will. Seeing that changes everything! Writing is a way to express our thoughts and ideas, our unique perspective.
This statement from Real Spelling is the Tools for Dyslexia motto:
“Every student has the right to be given a system of thinking that enables them to spell or read any word whenever or wherever they need it…”
Students need to understand the why of spelling. Then it makes sense and sticks with them. My learning how to help them see it has been a game-changer for my students.
Useful tools from my 13 years of homeschooling and decade of private tutoring are found in the Tools for Dyslexia shop, blog, and social media sites. The more we understand, the better we teach. We’re never done learning.
My husband and I have three adult children, one teenager, one grandson, and two much-loved dogs, who fill our lives with love, laughs, and woofs.
