Spelling with Suffixes that Sound the Same can be a Challenge. In this resource, we have an agent suffix and a superlative suffix to learn and practice.
Description
A fun way to practice spelling with EST and IST suffixes.
When students can’t sound out a spelling, they want a way to know the correct spelling. The <-est> superlative suffix and the <-ist> agent suffix are pronounced the same for most, if not all, English speakers. Students often misspell these because they aren’t sure which is correct. Many students haven’t learned about the meaning difference between them. These spelling activities will help them choose between the EST and IST suffixes.
As students look at the graphic, they’ll notice the two distinct suffixes. The other activities in this resource will help them practice and see the meaning connection to each suffix that gives them the key to knowing which suffix to use. The Wipe Out game is an engaging way to practice spelling. Having students use the Check the Spelling activity gives you and them an opportunity to see what they have learned and how they’re thinking through their spelling choice.
