Have fun playing Go Fish, Bingo, and Wipe Out games while practicing the replacing (drop-e) rule for adding suffixes to words with a single, final E using word sums.  During the Replacing E Rule Spelling Games, students recognize and verbalize the reasons to replace or not to replace. They love it because it’s a game and they have a fair chance of beating you. You love it because they’re learning and smiling!

Description

Replacing E Spelling Games beat worksheets any day!  Some call this suffixing rule the dropping rule. The term “replacing” reminds students that the final <e> is there just beneath the vowel suffix that replaced it. Using word sums as we practice this rule emphasizes word structure, giving students a great visual means to determine the suffixing rule to use. Students will enjoy this kind of spelling practice while they are recognizing and verbalizing the reasons to replace a final, single <e> and the reasons not to replace it.

Students can use the word sum sheet included or a wipe-off board to record their word sums. At the end of the game, they can read all the words they made for additional practice. They could also create sentences, verbally or in writing, from their word list.

When students can explain their reasoning for replacing final E or not replacing it, this understanding becomes their own that they can apply independently.

What is the Replacing E Rule?
If you’re adding a vowel suffix to a word that ends with a final e, you’ll replace the final <e> with the vowel suffix unless the needs to remain to mark that a preceding <c> is pronounced /s/ or a preceding <g> is pronounced /dʒ/ (j).
