Sign: A Structured Word Inquiry

$4.00

Why is there a G in <sign>? Often students misspell sign and other words with that base spelling because they’re trying to spell by sounding out. That doesn’t work well for this.. Give them the tools to see the spelling and meaning connections. After working through the matrix and other activities in this resource, these words will become more familiar, increasing their reading fluency and spelling accuracy.

Description

Let’s look at sign’s spelling and meaning connections. What is it about this word family that turns students and adults into word noticers? It’s eye-opening, for sure.

The graphic will grab their attention as you discuss what each word means and ask them to see what spelling the four words share. Then you’ll go to work on the matrix. That will give everyone a chance to become more familiar with the <sign> word family. (The angle brackets around a word mean that we’re spelling the word aloud rather than saying it.) There are also cloze sentences. What are cloze sentences? They’re fill-in-the-blank sentences using a specified word, or in this case, choosing from a specified word family. These sentences provide additional spelling practice and vocabulary building as students add prefixes and suffixes to <sign> to fit the sentence.

Included:

  • 1 discovery graphic
  • a structured word inquiry four questions page
  • <sign> matrix
  • 3 pages of cloze sentences
  • a correct-the-spelling sentences page (misspelled words are from the word family)
  • information to help you work through the four questions in this word study and the matrix
  • answer key to activities

Students will be excited to share these spelling and meaning connections with their family.
