The Whole Point of Spelling: Relationships & Word Families

$0.00

What’s the point of spelling? Well it’s not memorize, memorize, memorize. It’s about recognizing words and their relationships and word families. At least that’s what makes it easier for my students!

Description

This statement by David Crystal spoke to me. I hear students complain about spelling. We want our students to SEE the POINT of spelling.

What’s included:

  • The quote graphic
  • A word family graphic that shows a matrix and a word web B
  • A matrix page for student’s to write their word sums.
  • Tips for using a matrix

You could start the word web on the board for a group discussion and/or have them work on their own paper with “relate” at the center of their own word webs. Not all word sums have to be done for matrix learning to be complete. Not every member of a word family has to be written for a word web to be useful.

The Point of this resource is less about getting every possible word down and more about helping students SEE the connections: the spelling and meaning relationships between the words in this word family.

Print Landscape & Enjoy!

Happy Spelling!

p.s. David Crystal is British so his words are in his spelling. British: recognise  American: recognize This is another conversation you can have with your student(s) and the discussion will vary depending on where you live.
