What is Reading & Spelling Tutoring like?
Online dyslexia tutoring teaches students reading and spelling tools for literacy. Specifically:
- reading fluency
- reading comprehension
- spelling accuracy
- morphology (word structure)
- etymology (word origin, which impacts spelling)
- phonology (voiced sounds/phonemes).
Students need these skills for real world demands. We read fiction and non-fiction texts. They read and spell high-frequency words. We practice spelling patterns. They also learn about word structure and a word’s story.
Using Structured Word Inquiry (SWI), students develop tools they’ll use far beyond tutoring sessions. What is Structured Word Inquiry? It’s an engaging, investigative approach to understanding words. Memorizing a word’s spelling is not easy for dyslexic students. My students learn the reasons for a spelling. As a result, the word’s spelling becomes easier to remember.
Soon, they become familiar with prefixes, suffixes, and bases. They read longer words more easily. Reading, spelling, and vocabulary improve.
Effective Literacy Tutoring:

It’s Effective When There Is:
- improved reading accuracy, fluency, and comprehension.
- more interest in reading.
- improved spelling accuracy
- student engagement and curiosity. They asks questions and actively participate.
- student confidence and independence, growing literacy for a lifetime.
During tutoring, we encourage a positive, growth mindset. We inspire a love for reading and learning.
