Lots of students misspell “toward” when they’re spelling without seeing the structure of this direction word.

When we say /tword/, it doesn’t seem like it would be spelled t-o-w-a-r-d. Where’s the O in that pronunciation? It’s not there.
This word indicates a direction. In its spelling is a directional suffix: -ward. As your students learn this suffix, which often is pronounced /wərd/ with a schwa-R, they will recognize the spelling wouldn’t be w-o-r-d. That spelling connects to a different meaning.
