Take a closer look at imagination through this imagination structured word inquiry (SWI) (Bowers & Kirby, 2010).

Structured Word Inquiry is a research-based instructional practice of asking:

• What does the word mean? How might we use the imagination in a sentence?
• What’s the structure of the word (morphology)? Are there prefixes or suffixes? What’s the base?
• Where did this word come from (etymology)? What other related words are there?
• What are the letter-sound (grapheme-phoneme) correspondences?

When we dig into these four questions, we make connections that make spelling memorable. That benefits students in reading, spelling, and writing. Building literacy in all three aspects.
